Fueled by the explosion in online social networking, consumers, NGOs, the media and their own employees are holding companies to account about their treatment of workers, the sourcing and quality of their products and their corporate culture. ~ EY
I pondered how my personal values aligned with the values of my company
I took advantage of building a new CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) venture in the Netherlands based on the following question:
“How can I take the lessons learned the previous 20 years as a management consultant, and move them into a direction I felt more comfortable with?”
To be honest, this still isn’t an easy task. At the end of the day, rent is due. Creating something that aligns itself with personal values has the same risks as starting any new venture, I imagine.
I put myself in the shoes of a future employee, with questions such as:
- “What are my personal motivations toward Sampson?”
- “Does Sampson’s values align with mine?”
- “What will keep me working for Sampson?”
I took advantage of a personal challenge to see if I was heading in the right direction. I decided to put my company logo on a t-shirt I’d wear during a personal challenge.
I did something extreme for someone else
I like to challenge myself to make sure I’m alive. And, I personally extend myself to organizations like WarChild, to ‘pay rent’ for taking a privileged space on the planet.
I am proud to wear my company logo
Because I’m effectively an employee of my company… what about the company attracts me, and more importantly, would retain me.
I discovered that I wanted to be an employer that:
- Supported the entrepreneurial spirit of my employees
- Focused on quality, customer service, and provided fair prices for the engagements we acquire
- Created customer value-add opportunities through my employee’s personal value extension into the community
I want to encourage employees to take action in their community that coincided with their personal values. And, I want to reward them for that.
